PART 2.a - In Character Non-WH13/Eureka Canon Characters (Skip/delete if not applicable)
Full Name: Sara Sidle
Nicknames: Sara; “Cannon with a gun” (Long story); Sidle
DOB/Age: September 16, 1971 / 42 years old
Birthplace: Tamales Bay, CA
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Species: Human
Fandom: CSI: Las Vegas
Journal: cannonwithagun
PB: Jorja Fox
Holoprojection Human Interface PB: N/A
Canon Point: Season 13, Post “Forget Me Not”
Appearance: Sara stands at about 5’8”. She’s Caucasian with brown hair and brown eyes. She has three distinguishing marks: a gap between her two front teeth, a tattoo on one of her feet, and a scar along her left arm from when she was trapped underneath the car by the Miniature Killer. When she was out in the field, she normally wears a navy blue Crime Scene Investigator bullet proof vest over her clothing, normally slacks and a dress shirt. She is normally also seen with a gun belt on, holding her service arm and with a case that normally contains some of her evidence collecting equipment. When she’s in the lab, she doesn’t normally wear the vest, but will wear a lab coat when working with any evidence dealing with cases, along with the gloves and normal precautions to prevent contamination of evidence. She also has a gold ring, that she sometimes wears on a chain around her neck, it’s her wedding ring (but she won’t tell you that.)
History: Sara was born in San Francisco, and lived for years with her biological family (Mother and Father). In 1984, when Sara was 13, Sara's mother killed her father because he was abusive to her and Sara. It is debated in fandom if Sara witnessed this or not, it has never been addressed in the series at all. After this, she was moved around in foster care, but still managed to graduate high in her class at the age of 16 (two years younger than normal). She received a scholarship to Harvard (earning a Bachelor's of Science in Physics), and then went to Berkeley. In San Francisco, she worked at the coroner's office, and was able to audit lectures, which is where she first met Gil Grissom (the Las Vegas Crime Lab supervisor), who was to become her boss, and later her fiancé.
A few years later, she was called by Grissom to go to Las Vegas in order to be an outside person to investigate one of the CSI's there, Warrick Brown (Season 1). For the next seven years, she worked at the crime lab. It seems that for each year she worked at the labs, there was something unlucky that happened to her. In her second year, she was advised by Grissom that she was becoming too involved in her job, and that she should find outside sources of entertainment, not just Forensics Textbooks and police scanner that she owns. This led to her relationship with a paramedic named Hank in her third year, which ended when she discovered that he had been seeing her while in another, very serious, relationship.
During this same year she and another worker (Greg Sanders) at the lab were caught in an explosion that made her realize that life could be shorter than she originally realized. For the next two years, her life started looking like it was taking a downward turn. She was pulled over and given a DUI, although it was never charged, but put her in a bad situation with Grissom, considering that he was called and partially helped to cover up what had happened. She got into an argument with two of her superiors, Catherine Willows and Conrad Ecklie (the head of the entire lab), which ended up with her being suspended for a period of time. It was during this period of time that Sara began to bond with Grissom, telling him her family history, and admitting that she has a problem with authority.
For the next two years, Sara and Grissom form a relationship, which they successfully hid from the rest of the team until she was kidnapped by the Miniature Killer, and left trapped under a car in the desert to die. She became depressed after this, and in her last year in Vegas became overwhelmed by the cases she was working on. Grissom had proposed to her, and she had accepted, but she decided to leave Vegas for a time in order to deal with her 'demons' and face her past. She left a note for Grissom, saying that she would always love him, and explaining why she was leaving.
After leaving the lab, Sara goes to San Francisco to visit her mother before leaving for Costa Rica on a research team. She sends messages to Grissom during that time, showing that she seems to be happy outside of the lab, finally getting over her demons. Grissom ends up going down to Costa Rica and finding her, and they end up getting married after that.
A period of time later (It’s not really addressed…) Sara ends up back at the lab after Warrick Brown dies and his replacement leaves. She’s stuck around Vegas, although her husband, Grissom, lives in Paris and has a lecturing job at a university there. She’s been involved in many cases, including the “Dick and Jane” killer, leading to the firing of Ray Langston, and is now under D.B. Russell. Yet, she still remains what people would call the ‘moral compass of the team’.
Still with the lab, she’s now somewhat part of the LVPD scandal, where dirty cops (including the undersheriff) have made it so the department can’t work on their own. She’s managed to show that she has changed over the years, since she was able to drag Nick Stokes back to his senses after he got into a fight while intoxicated, and get him back to the lab, he ended up deciding not to quit. She also stood up for a stalking victim after she was murdered, blaming, but not threatening, the man who stalked her.
This ends up coming back to haunt her at a later time (Forget me Not), when Ronald Basderic tries to frame Sara for a murder she didn’t commit. She was at a hotel waiting for Grissom for dinner, and when he didn’t show, she ended up in the room of another man. He ends up dead by the next morning. Basderic had broken into Sara’s home and planted evidence leading to her, along with goading her that he was the killer and she was going to take the fall anyway. In the end, it was discovered that Basderic set her up. It’s at the end of the night that Sara tells Greg and Nick that she and Grissom had separated, deciding that the stress of a long distance relationship wasn’t worth it.
She’s leaving the lab when she finds herself in a strange room…and covered in purple goop.
Previous Game History, IF APPLICABLE: N/A
Personality: It can be said that Sara Sidle has two different personalities. The personality that people see depends on how long she has known them, and also if she is dealing with them as a friend/coworker or as a person she met while working a case. Her first personality seems cold, this is the side that someone first sees when they meet her. Because of her family life when she was a child, she grew up being cold to other people. She's not very comfortable dealing with people she doesn't know well. But, if she's meeting someone as a witness/suspect in a case she is working, this personality shows up because Sara wants to distance herself emotionally from the case.
Her second personality shows when Sara is with people that she knows or when she's working with victims of cases, most specifically when she's working with women or children. Sara becomes a nicer person overall, becoming motherly when she is working with kids, especially those who are in the same situation that she had been when she was a child. Although, she still remains distant to her friends and coworkers, but she doesn't snap or seem as bitchy to them as she did when she didn't know them as well. People who become her close friends (See Nick and Greg), become like her family, and she lets them in more than any other people around her. At the moment, she’s probably fairly distant because of her separation from Grissom and the emotional whiplash from that.
Special facts/special abilities about your character: Sara is a typical human, no superhuman abilities to speak of. She is incredibly smart, having graduated high in her high school class at the age of 16. She went to Harvard, then to Berkeley. Her degrees are mainly in science; the only canon fact about this being that her Bachelor's from Harvard is in Physics. There are examples where she can talk out a physics computation (That Nick makes fun of sometimes). She has some talents though, mostly things that have been developed in her job as a CSI. She is great at noticing details, has a knack for working with science equipment and running lab work, and also is great at figuring out puzzles/thinking outside of the box to solve them. She is also certified to carry a firearm, and normally carries a police firearm while she works (and sometimes when she’s off the clock). She can also sing decently. (And has an uncanny ability to see through bullshit.)
What is arriving with your character? As I’m pulling her from the end of an episode, she’ll have her clothes (given), sidearm, purse, and CSI kit. (She was carrying it to her car at the time.) Along with her wallet, wedding ring on the chain she wears it on now, and her watch she wears.
PART 3 - Writing Samples
1. First Person Writing Sample:
This thing is the strangest phone-esque thing I’ve seen in a long time. Definitely not what I’m used to…speaking of that, anyone know why I can’t get through to anyone back in Vegas on my phone? It’s as if the network died. [She shrugs in the video, she thinks it may have been that purple goop that she was drenched in when she first arrived.]
Then again, that doesn’t explain why when I called the lab, no one knew of Russell , Nick, or Greg. They even laughed at me when I said my name and hung up on me afterwards. Really out of character for the receptionists, they’re never rude. Ah well. I’ll have to check things out as I explore Univille.
Oh, and I don’t care what this ID says. Call me Sara. I’ll answer that.
2. Third Person Writing Sample:
Sara hummed as she walked down the strip, looking at the lights in the sunset light. She didn’t get many chances to do this, especially since she worked the night shift, and almost always put in long hours. Shoving her hands in her jacket pockets, she rubbed the ring on her left hand, thinking to the conversation she had with Grissom earlier in the day.
Things weren’t going well, and they didn’t seem like they would be getting better. Their relationship had been fine when they were both in Las Vegas, but after Costa Rica, and his time on the ‘lecture circuit’ as it were, things were rough. She stopped and sat on a bench, watching as the crowds of tourists began to thicken as they went out to catch the nightlife of Sin City. She just hoped she wouldn’t be finding any of their bodies later that night. A horrible side effect of being a CSI in this town.
She waved at one of the officers on their beat as she listened to the noise and people watched for a bit more. Reality would strike at some point, she had a while until she had to be out at the lab…unless Russell called and told her to go somewhere else first. Laughter from her left, and she looked over to see a couple walking down the sidewalk, probably heading from one bar, to another. They looked happy, in love. It made her wonder if she and Grissom ever looked like that, trying to hide things from the lab… then as things fell apart later in life. Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of her phone in her pocket.
“Sidle.” She listened to Russell on the other line. “Yeah, I’m at the Strip. I can be there in ten minutes.”
3. First or Third person Sample:
Sara tossed the Farnsworth on the bed of her room, staring at the wall in front of her. She’d gone through everything she’d been given…even put most of it away. She may not fully believe the story she’d been told by the weird hologram, but it was the best she could do at the moment. She’d get to the library to try to find out more later… maybe even the correct number to the lab. She must have called the wrong number somehow earlier… Maybe the pay phone she used was on the fritz. They were getting old these days.
She ran her fingers through her hair, feeling the curls that had reappeared since the shower to get rid of the purple goop. Now that it was wearing off, she was beginning to feel amounts of panic and confusion…while a small part of her brain was trying to figure out what to do now. She could rent a car and try to drive home... But it was a long drive from South Dakota to Nevada.
She stood, grabbing her shoes and slipping them on. She figured she could explore the town and see what there was to do… maybe find a diner or something. The snack she had been given earlier would only go so far. She needed a decent veggie burger or salad to think on her situation. Maybe a walk through the park… something to establish somewhat of a mental map…and keep her mind off of what crazy stuff was going on in this city. This city and their IRS warehouse on the outskirts.
Pulling out her iPod, she slipped in the earbuds as she left her room, praying that it still worked after being doused along with her. It was going to be an interesting few days.
